President of Republic launches National Handicrafts Days in Ouadane

His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, presided this Friday over the launch of the National Handicrafts Days in the district of Ouadane.

This event provides an opportunity to explore the evolution of the handicrafts sector through two pavilions: one displaying 120 products from various branches of handicrafts across all regions of the country, while the second pavilion is dedicated to modern handicraft products. These activities aim to highlight the ability of traditional artisans to master the skills passed down from their ancestors and use them to create modern goods of high heritage value.

The Minister of Vocational Training, Handicrafts, and Trades, Mr. Mohamed Maalainine Ould Eyih, expressed his joy in sharing the excitement of the people of Ouadane as they welcomed His Excellency the President of the Republic to this city. He noted that Ouadane was specifically chosen for the launch of the historic “Ouadane Declaration,” signaling a move away from outdated mindsets and rejecting behaviors that hinder the values of justice and equality. This declaration emphasizes the true value individuals earn through their work and their role in building the state and society.

He added that the President’s first term marked a new beginning for the handicrafts sector, including the adoption of a national strategy for its development. This strategy involved the renewal of the sector’s institutions, the regular participation of artisans in national and international exhibitions, and the launch of a major project to build a Handicrafts Village in Nouakchott.

He further mentioned that the sector is currently working on presenting a decree to establish a National Agency for Handicrafts. This agency will serve as a tool to mobilize various forms of support, including supervision, training, and financing, for this crucial economic sector. He emphasized that these days are not just an exhibition, but also a space for display and education, a platform for dialogue and vision-building, and a place where public policies intersect with field expertise.
