Technical Committee on Environment discusses Strategic Documents Related to strengthening the National System in the Field of Environment and Sustainable Development

The Technical Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development preparing for the sixth session of the Steering Committee stemming from the National Council for the Environment met today, Wednesday, in Nouakchott under the chairmanship of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mr. Moulay Ibrahim Ould Moulay Ibrahim, with the participation of representatives from the relevant sectors and some experts in the field.
The session was dedicated to discussing and approving the strategic documents related to strengthening the national system in the field of environment and sustainable development, particularly the National Five-Year Plan for Environment and Sustainable Development (2026-2030), and the third version of the Nationally Determined Contribution in the field of climate change.
The National Biodiversity Strategy for Horizon 2030, the Fifth National Statement on Climate Change, the draft National Strategy for Coastal Reserves, and the draft National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction, all in preparation for the Steering Committee meeting of the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, during the opening of the meeting, explained that these sessions come in implementation of the high directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, calling for the enhancement of environmental governance, the integration of the environmental and climate dimension into development policies and programs, and the consolidation of the principles of sustainable development as a strategic choice for our country and an essential condition for the well-being of our future generations.
He emphasized that the work of the Technical Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development is of particular importance, as it constitutes the key link that ensures coordination and consultation between ministerial sectors and relevant national bodies, and helps in preparing and reviewing reference documents to be presented to the Steering Committee for approval.
He pointed out that the documents presented for discussion during this session, which include sectoral environmental strategies, climate action plans, coastal planning documents, and adaptation and pollution reduction programs, represent practical tools to enhance our national capacities to face environmental and climate challenges, including desertification and water scarcity, in addition to the increasing pressures on our natural resources.
He affirmed that these challenges require working with a spirit of partnership and in complete harmony between the various sectors under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister, Mr. Mokhtar Ould Diay
He expressed his thanks to the experts and the personnel of the relevant sectors for the great efforts they exerted in preparing these documents, which are the subject of the session, and for their constant commitment to supporting the government’s directions in this field, emphasizing the necessity of continuing coordinated work and enhancing the exchange of data and experiences to ensure sound decision-making for the best implementation of environmental and developmental programs and projects..
