His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, held a meeting yesterday evening with the officials of the moughataa of Néma. He began by expressing his sincere thanks and gratitude for the warm welcome and the massive participation in the popular meeting. His Excellency the President of the Republic stated that the purpose of the meeting was to listen to the participants and exchange views on issues concerning the moughataa. He added that Néma is the largest moughataa of the wilaya and that it possesses high-quality human resources and significant natural resources, but that it still faces development challenges that we must all strive to address.
On this basis, added the President of the Republic, the State has accorded it special attention, which has been manifested through the mission entrusted to the government to turn it into reality through the achievements accomplished, those in progress, and those planned, God willing. His Excellency the President of the Republic explained that the program launched today, relating to development and access to basic services, will provide the Néma moughataa with numerous necessary facilities, notably the construction of 105 classrooms between primary and secondary education, and the regular provision of meals for the residents of 108 school canteens in Néma, whose number of beneficiaries has increased from 7,461 individuals in 2019 to 9,370 in 2025.
In the health sector, three health centers have been built in three localities of the moughataa, including Akriat Ajrak, Al-Maksema, and Hassi Atila, and three health centers have been expanded and rehabilitated in Loudiat and Birbafa, for example. A total of 1,734 families benefited from universal health insurance, and 735 children regularly benefited from the program to combat child malnutrition. His Excellency emphasized that regarding access to drinking water, more than 286 artesian wells have been drilled at the wilaya level, including 53 in the moughataa of Néma, and more than 131 new water networks have been established, including 33 at the moughataa level, for example in Boukhzama, Bir Jeknay, Bennaamane, and Zriba, and the drinking water networks have been connected to the villages of Chelkhet Ennaga, Dar Salam, and the Dhar project.
His Excellency indicated that the residents of the Néma moughataa and its municipalities will benefit from the doubling of the production of the Dhar project, whose work will begin in the coming weeks, which will solve the water problem. In the field of electricity, the amount of production has been doubled thanks to the extension of the network, and villages such as Alsabie, Faraa Al-Kattan, Choub 2, Agouinit, Ourioura, Ouediada, and Lassidbi have been electrified. It should be noted here that pumping and delivering water from wells was a burden on the electricity sources in Néma, and, consequently, the new project will provide energy to pump water on-site, thereby reducing the load on the Néma power plant.
Regarding agriculture and livestock, 8 dams have been built and 9 sand dams have been constructed, and areas have been developed for vegetable cultivation. Two pastoral water stations have also been established, and the dairy plant has been rehabilitated, an important project from which we expect much and which could serve as a model project. His Excellency the President of the Republic emphasized the importance of creating the Al-Bahga farm, launched during a previous working visit.
His Excellency reviewed the achievements in the areas of housing, urban planning, and roads, explaining in this context that the urban planning plan for the city of Néma has been developed and implemented, and in the field of roads, for the first time, the Route de l’Espoir has been built and rehabilitated and is now a fully passable road from Néma to Nouakchott; this is the first time since the creation of the Route de l’Espoir that a section of up to 700 km has been rehabilitated.Work is also underway to connect Néma to all the moughataas, as we strive to accelerate the project linking Néma to Oualata, which has been delayed due to an unsuccessful study caused by the lack of adoption of an appropriate route that helps to open up access for the population along the road.
As part of social programs, 1,681 families benefited from regular cash transfers, 5 production cooperatives were supported, and 100 income-generating activities were assisted. Similarly, 74 stores were regularly supplied, with quantities increasing from 3,019 tons to 4,528 tons per year, and grain banks were opened to sell wheat at a subsidized price. His Excellency emphasized that what has been achieved so far for the residents of Néma represents an encouraging stage in a development process that the government aims to strengthen and expand, but our ambition for the moughataa far exceeds what has been accomplished.
His Excellency the President of the Republic added: “Today, from the city of Néma, we have launched the program for access to basic services, from which the moughataa of Néma will greatly benefit, and which I will now discuss. In the field of education, it includes the construction of 262 classrooms. In the field of health, 10 health centers will be built, ambulances will be provided, medical staff will be reinforced, and new medical equipment will be acquired. In the field of water, the moughataa of Néma will benefit from 14 artesian wells, two wells lacking equipment will be outfitted, 11 water networks will be extended, and the traditional source that once supplied the city of Néma with water will be rehabilitated and used as a reservoir.”
In the field of electricity, a 1,250-kilowatt electric generator will be acquired for the city of Néma, the electrical network will be extended by 63 km of medium voltage and 47 km of low voltage, and 21 localities such as Sbeih, Chouba, Ouriouira, Amreihim 1, Amreihim 2, Oum Asdir 1, Oum Asdir 2, Safaa, Madroum, Anoul, Ouediade, Ahl Sid Bey, and Akouinit will be electrified. The isolation of Jreiv in the moughataa of Néma will be lifted. In the field of youth empowerment, the share of the moughataa in the small business financing program will be implemented, as well as those in the financial grant program and in the training and volunteering programs aimed at youth employment. His Excellency concluded by saying that challenges will persist, but at the same time, the demands remain legitimate and await a response. It is incumbent upon all of us to continue working and to intensify our efforts to ensure comprehensive development in the moughataa. To address these challenges, our meeting this evening was a valuable opportunity to exchange our visions and to listen to you, as well as your opinions drawn from your daily reality, in order to develop a realistic development vision that meets the aspirations of the residents of Néma and strengthens its position on the national development map.
The contributions of some participants focused on the lack of certain basic services such as education, health, water, and electricity, as well as on urban planning at the level of certain groupings and villages in the moughataa.
The government officials present responded, each according to the field of intervention of their sector, to the questions and concerns of the participants, explaining the programs and policies in place to overcome these obstacles in order to improve the conditions of citize
