Head of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture visits Riyadh Province Prison

Riyad

The head of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (NPM), Mr. Cheikh Ahmed Ould Zahaf, paid a visit on Thursday to Riyadh Prison.

During the visit, he was briefed on the conditions of prisoners in this facility and was given explanations by the prison officials on various topics related to this prison.

In a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency following the visit, the head of the mechanism explained that it comes within the framework of the visits he makes these days to prisons and detention centers to familiarize himself with these facilities and the conditions of those deprived of freedom and prisoners inside these institutions.

He added that he noticed during his visit to this prison that it represents a model for prisons in general, both in the past and in the present.

He noted that he favors the generalization of this exemplary experience throughout the country so that all prisons are based on the standards he saw today in this prison.

He called for the preservation of this facility, noting that the real bet is to preserve it and its services.

The second bet is to start the project related to rehabilitation and training as soon as possible for the benefit of prisoners because it is a project that holds a lot of positive things and will naturally help in the reintegration of prisoners, he said.

He recommended that judges and lawyers should treat prisoners’ sentences in the best way possible and ensure that their sentences are not longer than their sentences and that their files are followed up in a satisfactory manner
