The Representatives of the Mauritanian community in the United States stressed the importance of the working visit of HE President of the Republic Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to the United States of America (July 9-11, 2025), at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.

In interviews with the Mauritanian News Agency (WAMA) on Tuesday, the representatives of the community said that this visit reflects a keen and frank American interest in Mauritania and represents an opportunity to strengthen relations between Mauritania and the United States in various fields.

 

Mr. Banmou Ould Sidi Ould Banmou, head of the Mauritanian community in New York City, said that this visit is a precedent in the history of Mauritanian-American relations and reflects a great and clear American interest in Mauritania, attributing this to several main reasons, including Mauritania’s strategic location in the Sahel region and its vital role, as well as its geopolitical and security situation.

He added that the political and security stability witnessed by Mauritania is a key factor in attracting the interest of major countries economically around the world, not only the United States, noting that Mauritania has “great economic potential” of interest to the United States, especially in the field of energy, whether through the exploitation of gas, oil, green hydrogen or solar energy, in addition to mineral wealth.

Regarding the implications of this visit on the Mauritanian community living in the United States, Banmu said that “America is a state of law” and that the Mauritanian community is subject to the law like all communities and American citizens alike, noting that there could be “positive repercussions in multiple areas,” including facilitating the issuance of visas and promoting cultural cooperation such as grants for university students and vocational training.

He predicted broader security and economic cooperation, including development in its various aspects, such as agricultural development and security.

“I consider it a historic visit and a great indicator of the development of Mauritanian-American relations,” Banmou Ould Sidi Ould Banmou told the agency.

 

 

 

For her part, the President of the New York State Association, Mrs. Safia Bint El Nah, said that the meeting between President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and US President Donald Trump “is not only an important diplomatic event, but also a landmark moment that reflects the international appreciation of Mauritania and its growing position on the global stage, and will open new horizons for cooperation and partnership between the two countries in vital areas such as security, economic development, and education.”

 

She expressed her hope that cooperation relations between Mauritania and the United States will be strengthened, contributing to the development of many fields that benefit the Mauritanian people.

 

 

The coordinator of the President of the Republic’s campaign in Washington, Mr. Sid’ Ahmed Ould Ahmed Ould Ahmed said that the choice of President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, among five African presidents to meet with US President Donald Trump is an honor for Mauritania and reflects its growing status in the international arena.

 

He stressed that this meeting strengthens our country’s relations with the United States and opens the door to strategic partnerships, expressing his hope that this meeting will be translated into investment opportunities and development projects.

 

He added: “We believe that this type of meeting contributes to improving the image of Mauritania, and gives us hope for greater support and facilitating the conditions of living and working abroad, as well as enhancing our contribution to the development of the country.”

 

He called on the Mauritanian community residing in the United States to express their gratitude and thanks to the President of the Republic for his efforts in serving the community, including activating dual citizenship, facilitating financial transfers, and digitizing secure documents, praising the importance of the community’s representation in the Mauritanian Parliament.

 

 

 

In turn, the social affairs officer of the Mauritanian community in Chicago, and a member of the community’s media office, Mr. Mohamed Val Aldi, said that choosing Mauritania among the five countries that US President Donald Trump decided to hold a summit with their leaders is a very important matter, stressing that it comes at an exceptional period in which Mauritania has important cards, including the economic file.

 

He pointed out that after the issuance of international reports with expectations of reserves of up to 110 trillion cubic meters of gas, Mauritania has become more important in the eyes of most Western countries that seek and need natural wealth such as gas, which is an important source of energy, noting that the United States of America is an important partner for Mauritania in the field of gas through ExxonMobil.

 

He pointed out that Mauritania is an important link between West and North Africa on the one hand and Europe on the other, which makes it an important trade point for the arrival of US and European exports, especially since China has become a real competitor in Africa by relying on the ports of Mauritania due to its important geographical location.

 

He expressed his hope that the visit will be a turning point towards solving all the issues raised by the community in the United States of America.

 

She emphasized that for the Mauritanian community in the United States, this meeting is a source of pride and reflects “the strength of the ties between the community and its homeland, and strengthens our position abroad.”

 

 

Mr. Altourad Cheikh Altourad, in charge of the Mauritanian community affairs in the state of Michigan, stressed that the visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic to the United States carries a lot of importance, both on the political and economic levels, explaining that his choice among five African presidents to meet with the US President reflects Mauritania’s status and role in the African and international arena, adding that the visit is an opportunity to strengthen relations between Mauritania and the United States in several fields, in addition.

Sidi Ould Gheb, one of the oldest members of the Mauritanian community in the US Midwest, described the upcoming summit in Washington as “good news for Africans and African-American cooperation.”

 

He expressed his optimism that the summit, which will bring together five African leaders, including President of the Republic Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, will be a turning point in the course of African-American cooperation.

 

He said that Mauritanians, and Africans in general, are expecting “an important transformation and a qualitative leap in the path of cooperation with the United States of America.”

He explained that trade investment will be one of the main headlines of the summit, hoping that the summit will have a major role in revitalizing the African economy, especially in these countries, and promoting investment and cooperation in areas such as minerals and energy.

 

Ould Gheb pointed out that Mauritania has a special place in the summit, expecting a “qualitative leap” in enhancing cooperation and highlighting its importance.

 

He noted that the Mauritanian government, under the leadership of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has made great efforts in “enacting laws that respect human and neighboring rights, deal with economic, security and investment factors, and open the doors to investors.”

 

These factors, in addition to “sophisticated and distinguished diplomacy,” have led to Mauritania being “the center of attention and will be a partner in this summit,” he said, expecting “a lot of economic revitalization and trade cooperation between the United States and Mauritania.”

The head of the Mauritanian community in the Greater Cincinnati area (Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky), Mr. Sid Ahmed Ould Mohamed El Mokhtar Ould Habib, explained that the choice of the Mauritanian president among the five heads of state who will participate in the African-American Summit was not arbitrary, but came on the basis of common interests, as well as the status of the President of the Republic and his experience in African affairs.

He added that Mauritania has important energy discoveries and is characterized by its proximity to Europe, reviewing Mauritania’s energy sources and their strategic importance, calling for good investment in this field.

Regarding the impact of this visit on the Mauritanian community residing in the United States, he said that the meeting will provide facilities for them, enhance their stability, and improve their future aspirations.

He praised all the efforts made by the President of the Republic for the community living abroad, starting with dual citizenship and the proximity of civil status services through the “My Identity” application.

He presented the community’s demands to the President of the Republic, including: Providing a mobile civil status office for members of the community, bringing its services closer to the resident community, providing the visa through a website, and sending it automatically, as is the case with other civil papers in the “My Identity” application.

He also called for legalizing remittances to protect them from speculation, and providing work visas.
