President of Republic, His Senegalese Counterpart Take Part in Inauguration Ceremony for Ahmeyem LNG Export Operations (Offshore)
On 22 May, His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, took part, alongside his Senegalese counterpart, His Excellency President Bassirou Dioumay Faye, from the floating natural gas liquefaction (FLNG) platform in the Grande Tortue d’Ahmeyem gas field, in the inauguration ceremony for liquefied natural gas (LNG) export operations, which began last April.
In addition to His Excellency the President of the Republic and his Senegalese counterpart, the inauguration ceremony was attended by senior executives from BP and Cosmos Energy, including BP CEO Murray Auchincloss.
The Grande Tortue d’Ahmeyem (GTA) gas field project is one of the most important 2025 gas production projects.
It is located on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, 120 km off the coast, with wells at depths of up to 2,850 meters, making it one of the deepest subsea infrastructures in Africa.
Phase 1 of the project is expected to produce around 2.4 million tonnes of LNG/year, part of which is destined for domestic demand. This phase has been classified as a national project of strategic importance, representing a major achievement in making Mauritania an exporter of liquefied natural gas.
It should be noted that the first safe flow of gas from the Phase 1 wells to the floating production, storage, and loading unit took place last January, making the project an innovative development in the field of offshore LNG.
