Nouakchott
HE President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, on Thursday evening, gave the go-ahead for the launch of the first phase of the “Nouakchott Mobility Project 2026” and the start of the operation of the administrative headquarters of the public transport company and its annexes.
The President of the Republic listened to detailed explanations about the Nouakchott Mobility Project, which will contribute to solving the issue of urban mobility, encourage the use of mass transportation (fast and high-quality buses), instead of personal cars, in addition to its role in improving the urban appearance of the capital.
The “Nouakchott Mobility 2026” project is one of the most important qualitative achievements implemented under the pledges of the President of the Republic, and reflects an integrated vision for the development of urban transportation in the capital.
The project consists of two components: Infrastructure and the BHNS bus service.
The infrastructure consists of three tracks, the first of which is 11 kilometers long, with 13 stations, and extends from the “Tazer” bridge to the “Friendship” bridge, and the second track connects between Tognin and the combined clinic, passing through the Friendship Bridge, with a length of 9 kilometers and 12 stations.
The third track is 15 kilometers long and has 17 stations, and extends from the Friendship Bridge to the university campus, passing through the cardiology center, Sheikh Zayed, Jamal Abdel Nasser, Sabah intersection, and BMD intersection.
The second component of this project includes the acquisition of 112 buses by the public transportation company, including 62 high-quality 150-passenger buses with a surveillance system and digital information screens, and 50 medium buses with a capacity of 100 passengers.
The project includes the installation of smart triple traffic lights at major intersections, which will reduce bus travel time, improve traffic flow and increase the commercial speed of bus rapid transit (BHNS)
This smart traffic management will enable buses to be prioritized at intersections through sensors installed on buses and traffic lights, and will identify buses approaching the intersection and send the information to the traffic light control unit, allowing buses to be prioritized.
The President of the Republic also visited the new headquarters of the Public Transport Company and listened to detailed explanations provided by the Director General of the Public Transport Company.
The new headquarters consists of two floors with several rooms, including an operations room for organizing networks, a 40-seat training room and a commercial agency.
It also includes a bus center with a capacity of 40 buses, and the old airport building has been rehabilitated and adapted to become a bus maintenance garage.
At the end of the visit, HE the President of the Republic inspected the express buses, boarded one of them, and toured the express bus routes between the Friendship Bridge and the Lakbid Junction.
