Nouakchott
On Friday, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum issued a statement on the leak that occurred at the Turtle Ahmeyim GTA gas field, confirming that gas production from the field is continuing normally. The ministry said that on February 19, 2025, the operator of the Turtle Ahmeyim GTA gas field, Bp, informed Mauritania and Senegal of a leak in well A02 of the field, located 120 km from the coast, which had not yet been put into operation.
The Mauritanian authorities asked the company to take all measures as soon as possible to control the leak, minimize its effects, and treat it permanently, while reporting on its possible developments as soon as possible.
In response, the company submitted proposed solutions with the best and fastest options, including those costly to it, and mobilized a large technical team that arrived in Nouakchott to prepare and supervise the implementation of the solution.
On February 26, an Antonov cargo plane landed at Nouakchott airport with the technical parts and equipment needed to contain the leak from the wellhead, the ministry said in its statement, adding that since that day, technical teams have been installing the parts at the port of Nouakchott and the installation was completed on Friday, March 7, and the specialized ship with the technical team and machinery left the port of Nouakchott this evening heading to the GTA field site.
The Mauritanian and Senegalese authorities continue their intensive coordination in cooperation with BP to monitor the area and continue to assess and track the impact of the spill, and the specialized technical teams in the two countries continue to exchange information with the operator on a daily basis and at the highest levels.
The ministry explained that the monitoring is carried out on several axes, including helicopters, drones, the use of a robotic underwater vehicle (ROV), and real-time satellite surveillance to permanently track the area.
