Mauritania, China Sign MoU for Arable Land Rehabilitation

On 3 December, in Riyadh, on the sidelines of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to Combat Desertification, currently being held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Mauritania and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) concerning the conduct of a feasibility study for the rehabilitation and reforestation of 10,000 hectares in the area of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall.

The MoU was signed on the Mauritanian side by Ms. Messaouda mint Baham Ould Mohamed Laghdaf, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, and on the Chinese company side by its Chairman, Mr. Liu Tao, in the presence of Mr Sidina Ould Ahmed Ely, the Managing Director of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, and Mr Zhang Yuanming, the Director General of the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The MoU aims to combat desertification, restore degraded land, and promote sustainable development by supporting local communities and creating economic opportunities.

The Minister welcomed the signing of the agreement, saying that it was an important step toward consolidating Mauritania’s role in tackling environmental challenges and strengthening international cooperation within the framework of the Great Green Wall initiative.
