President of Republic Lays Foundation Stone for Developing 1,575 Hectares, Cleaning, Widening Konde-Djeo-Ankalak-Konde Tributary.

On 25 November, in Dar El Baraka (Brakna), His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, laid the foundation stone for the development of 1,575 hectares and the clearing and extension of the 25.5 km long Konde-Djeo-Ankalak-Konde waterway, as part of the commemoration of the 64th anniversary of National Independence Day.

The project aims to increase the area of flood-recession farmland that will benefit the region’s inhabitants, improving their living conditions and giving them access to the production cycle. It will guarantee access to farmland for vulnerable groups, help to increase national production of strategic crops such as rice and vegetables, and provide irrigation water for the newly reclaimed areas.

Mauritanian government and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) co-finance the project as part of the 34 million euro Mauritanian Agricultural Transformation Project (PTA).

The first component of the project, relating to development, will be carried out over 16 months, outside the winter season, while the second component, relating to the cleaning and reshaping of the tributary, will be carried out over 12 months, again outside the winter season.
