On 11 November, the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) organized a virtual workshop entitled “Advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence in the creation of news content” in cooperation with the Sputnik news agency, with broad participation by media professionals and specialists in OIC member countries.
At the start of the workshop, UNA Director General Mr. Muhammad bin Abd Rabbo Al-Yami explained that the workshop aims to identify the great opportunities offered by artificial intelligence in the field of information content creation in all its forms, the risks and opportunities associated with the use of artificial intelligence in this aspect, in addition to reviewing the most important tools and applications needed by those working in this field.
Mr. Al-Yami stressed that artificial intelligence has become a reality that is imposing itself day by day on communication and media work and the lives of journalists. This transformation is forcing us to adapt and keep pace with the “AI” revolution, which will change the concepts and tools of journalism that we have known and become familiar with over the past decades.
Al-Yami thanked Sputnik for its willingness to share its experiences with journalists from OIC member states, reflecting its deep belief in knowledge transfer and the exchange of professional expertise on a global level.
Mr. Artyom Khabbarov, head of Sputnik’s artificial intelligence project, reviewed some of the media applications of AI, particularly in the field of news content creation, explaining that news content in this respect includes all information that is distributed through various channels such as TV, radio, print, websites, and social media platforms.
Mr. Khabbarov spoke about AI-generated news content, explaining that such content is journalistic storytelling created by AI algorithms and deep learning methods under the supervision of a human.
He emphasized that AI saves journalists a lot of time and effort and offers many opportunities for creativity if used correctly.
Mr. Khabbarov discussed the most important forms of news content created by AI and the applications used in this regard.
He also touched on a number of risks associated with the use of AI in the creation of news content, including the bias of certain AI applications, neural networks, and the infringement of proprietary rights.
The workshop featured interventions and discussions from participating media professionals on the best ways to use AI in news content in a way that complies with media policies and ethics.
The workshop is part of a series of training and education programs organized by UNA on AI and the media, with the aim of building the capacity of journalists in some countries and raising their awareness of the rapid changes in media content production.
