Civil Service Minister Meets With ILO Director General

As part of the series of meetings he has been holding on the sidelines of his participation in the 352nd session of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Mr. Mohamed Ould Sweidatt, the Minister of Civil Service and Labor, met on 1 November with Gilbert Houngbo, the ILO Director General.

The meeting was an opportunity for the Minister to inform the Director General of the efforts made by Mauritania, under the enlightened vision of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, to consolidate the rule of law and democratic practice and promote social justice. He also presented the most important initiatives and projects his department is working on.

The Minister referred to the public forums for social protection that are currently being prepared and will be held early next year. These forums will include all contributory or non-contributory components of social protection, including the poor classes and the informal economy.

In this context, he stressed the importance of the reform this initiative will initiate and called on the Director General to support Mauritania by participating actively in organizing the event and implementing its results.

Mr. Ould Sweidatt also spoke of the department’s intention to establish and implement a national decent work program in line with the directives of the President of the Republic and the political priorities of the Prime Minister’s government.

The discussion also focused on determining the representativeness of trade union organizations, launched last Wednesday with the approval by the Council of Ministers of a communiqué containing the roadmap translating it into reality.

In his response to the Minister’s request, the ILO Director General expressed the Organization’s willingness to make every effort to carry out the projects on which the government is working, adding that they cut across ILO priorities and that he would be personally enthusiastic about participating in forums linked to social protection.
