Brazilia

Mr. Tah Ahmed Mouloud, Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, participated in the meeting of the Technical Working Group on Trade and Investment of the Group of Twenty, and in the meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Group held in Brasilia from 21 to 24 October 2024.

The two meetings discussed a number of pressing issues such as the role of trade and investment mechanisms in advancing sustainable and inclusive development, ways to address the challenges faced by countries due to the divergence in their development paths, opportunities to reformulate the development agenda, especially in developing countries, and the need for additional efforts to promote justice, equity and inclusiveness, as well as introducing global reforms that ensure the creation of investment environments that promote sustainable development.

They also discussed ways to bridge the large financing gap estimated at $300 billion annually to achieve the objectives of the African Union Plan 2063 and enhance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

In a speech at the ministerial meeting, Mr. Tah Ould Ahmed Mouloud conveyed to the participants the greetings of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Chairperson of the African Union, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, and his wishes that their work would be crowned with success, noting that the theme: “Building a just world and a sustainable planet” chosen by the Brazilian presidency of the Group of Twenty coincides with the Mauritanian vision and its endeavor to make Africa a continent that enjoys sustainable development, benefits from fair investment and inclusive growth, and contributes to achieving shared global prosperity.

He added that Africa is witnessing a profound transformation, due to its young and creative human resources, and in light of important initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, highlighting that the continent’s share of global trade is still at only 3%, despite the fact that Africa includes 17% of the world’s population, and this disparity highlights the urgent need to reform the global trading system.

The Presidential Advisor stressed that the reform of the WTO must lead to making it a more open, transparent, inclusive and development-focused institution, while recognizing the constraints faced by developing countries, calling on the Group of Twenty to support Africa’s endeavors to reduce barriers to trade, promote value-added investments and sustainable development.

In this regard, Mr. Tah Ould Ahmed Mouloud urged Africa’s partners in the G20 to support infrastructure development on the continent, through green and sustainable financing, and to collaborate with African institutions on projects that address the twin challenges of climate change, and promote the digital economy and emerging technologies.
