Biography of the President of the Republic of India

Nouakchott

Ms. Drupadi Mormo was sworn in as the fifteenth President of India on 25 July 2022, having previously served as Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Growing up and education

Mrs. Mormo was born on June 20, 1958 in the village of Uparbeda, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Upon completing her primary education from the village school, she went to Bhubaneswar on her own initiative to continue her studies, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramadivi Women’s College, Bhubaneswar and becoming the first woman from her village to benefit from a university education.

Career

From 1979 to 1983, Ms. Mormo served as a junior assistant in the Department of Irrigation and Energy, Government of Odisha. Subsequently, she worked as an honorary teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Centre for Integrated Education in Rairangpur from 1994 to 1997.

Public life

In 2000, Ms. Mormo was elected from the Rairangpur constituency as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and continued to hold this position until 2009, when she held this position for two terms. During this period, she served as Minister of State (Independent Official) in the Ministry of Trade and Transport of the Government of Odisha from 6 March 2000 to 6 August 2002, and Minister of State (Independent Official) in the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of the Government of Odisha from 6 August 2002 to 16 May 2004. In both missions, innovative initiatives and people-oriented measures have been presented.

She has also been appointed as a member of several committees including House committees and standing committees of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. She also chaired some committees.

Thanks to her rich managerial experience and efforts to disseminate education, and in recognition of her services as a legislator, she received the Pandit Nilkanth Das Award – Best Legislator in 2007 from the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Other interests

Ms. Mormo has been associated with many social, educational and cultural organizations in Odisha and is an avid reader.

Personal life

In 1981, Ms. Mormo married (the late) Shyam Sharan Mormo, who was a bank clerk, and has a daughter, Mrs. Itchery Mormo.
