Nouakchott Region President Delivers Message From President of Republic to AU Commission Chairperson

On 12 September, in Adis Ababa, Ms. Fatimetou Abdelmalek, the President of the Nouakchott Region and Chairperson of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG) delivered a message from His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), to Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The President of the Nouakchott Region conveyed the greetings of His Excellency the President of the Republic to the AU Commission Chairperson, noting His Excellency’s efforts to strengthen the role of African local and regional assemblies under the leadership of Mauritania within the African Union and calling for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UCLG and the African Union Commission.

During the meeting, she called for the revitalization of the activities of the High Council of Territorial Communities approved at the General Assembly of Heads of State of the African Union held in June 2014 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, following the example of the recent adoption by the UN Secretary General of a UN Consultative Group on Local and Regional Communities and the strengthening of its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through the revision of the Charter of the Future at the Summit of the Future to be held in New York before the end of September 2024.

For his part, the AU Commission Chairperson thanked the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for his interest in African local and regional assemblies and stressed his conviction in the role of cities and local governments in achieving the objectives and agenda of the African Union, committing to strengthening their role in the AU Commission’s programs and plans.
