Nouakchott
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, Mr. Elbakay Ould Abdelkader, on Thursday morning in Nouakchott, oversaw the launch of a workshop to present the results of the study on gender mainstreaming in the public service, organized in cooperation between the Public Service Sector and the Financial and Administrative Governance Support Program in Mauritania.
The two-day workshop aims to present and discuss a set of studies prepared by experts on gender within the human resources of the Mauritanian public service, including a legal study on gender mainstreaming in the Mauritanian public service, addressing the main trends of women’s representation in the labor market and entrepreneurship, the public service and decision-making positions, as well as the regulatory framework for equality between women and men.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, Mr. Elbakay Ould Abdelkader, said during the opening of the workshop that this activity comes within a series of activities organized by the sector with the aim of reforming and improving the administration and developing human resources as a way to create an integrated reform in which women participate along side men in a way that guarantees the rights of all genders.
He added that based on the great importance of Mauritanian women in the program of His Excellency, President of the Republic Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, which the government is working to implement, Mauritania has been able to achieve a number of important results for gender through the adoption of policies and reforms aimed at empowering women and integrating them in various activities and fields.
The spokesperson for the European Union Representation in Mauritania, Mohamed Lamam Malik, stressed that the Union’s priority is to support the Mauritanian government in its efforts to achieve equality between men and women, noting the government’s efforts in this regard, especially the development of a national development strategy and programs.
He said that the European Union is working with the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, within the framework of gender mainstreaming in the public service.
For his part, Director of the Financial and Administrative Governance Support Program in Mauritania, Christian Denham, explained that the theme of this forum (gender in the public service) is a pillar of modernization and reform in order to improve the lives of all genders.
He added that improving women’s access to the labour market, especially in the public service and their participation in governance is an important part of the measures contributing to reducing inequality, noting that studies have proven that reducing this inequality in education and empowerment contributes equitably to sustainable development.
