National Election Monitoring Observatory Meets With UN Delegation

On 28 May, in Nouakchott, Ms. Diye Ba, the President of the National Election Monitoring Observatory, and members of the executive office of the Observatory held meetings with a UN delegation composed of Leonardo Santos Simao, the personal representative of the UN Secretary General, head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and Lila Peters Yahia, the UN Resident Coordinator in Mauritania.

The discussions focused on cooperation between the National Election Monitoring Observatory and the UN organization, particularly in the priority areas of the Observatory in terms of election monitoring and full participation of all national and international observers. The National Election Observatory is made up of two bodies: the National Council and the Executive Office.

The National Council is considered the supreme body of the Observatory. It is made up of a president and eleven (11) members from civil society and trade union organizations. As for the second body of the Observatory, the Executive Office, it includes a president, a secretary general, a treasurer, and three support advisors responsible respectively for legal affairs, communication, and training. The president and members of the National Council are appointed by a decision of the Prime Minister.
