On 1 April, in Nouakchott, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development launched the voluntary national review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2024, which will be presented at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2024. The review aims to monitor progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals and their targets, in an integrated and inclusive manner, which requires an objective, well-informed, participatory, transparent, and accessible review, with particular attention to the poorest and most vulnerable groups in society.
Mr. Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, indicated that this review is the second after that of 2019, which resulted in important recommendations to address the challenges that hinder the achievement of sustainable development objectives.
He added that this review will be an opportunity for the government to highlight the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from the implementation of development policy, particularly with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals and their integration into the action plan of the national sustainable development strategy.
”Despite the challenges facing the Mauritanian economy, it has been relatively resilient, which has enabled it to overcome the contraction caused by COVID-19,” he said, adding that Mauritania has made significant progress in 2022 in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and that it is likely that 20% of the goals have been achieved, and 57% have seen remarkable progress, while 23% of the goals have declined.
For her part, Ms. Leila Peters Yahya, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, said she was honored to attend the launch of the voluntary national review of the 2024 Sustainable Development Goals in Mauritania.
”The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development marked the start of a new path to unite global efforts to address the world’s most pressing challenges,” she said, noting that after less than seven years, the world, including Mauritania, still has a long way to go to achieve the set goals.
She stressed that since the adoption of the SCAPP project, the alignment of Mauritania’s development strategy with the Sustainable Development Goals has been demonstrated, and through the submission of its first voluntary national review in 2019, Mauritania has demonstrated its willingness to fulfill its international obligations and make the necessary efforts to achieve an inclusive and sustainable development.
Ms. Yahya also indicated that the UN Framework for Sustainable Development Cooperation 2024-2027 was recently signed, adding that its implementation will start this year.
The ceremony was marked by several interventions focused on the fundamental objectives of sustainable development, with particular attention to the vulnerable and poor segments of society, which allowed participants to follow a detailed presentation on the subject, what Mauritania has achieved in this regard, and what is planned by 2027.
