Government Spokesman: Mauritania Aspires to be the First African Country to Export Green Hydrogen
Nouakchott
In response to a question about green hydrogen, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Nani Ould Chrougha, said that Mauritania aspires to be the first African country to export this material, thanks to its high capabilities in this field in addition to solar and wind energy, as well as the large area and distinguished geographical location, which are qualified to attract investors to extract this energy.
For his part, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mr. Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, said in his comment on the statement on Mauritania’s access to benefit from the Resilience and Sustainability Fund of the International Monetary Fund, under which Mauritania benefited from $ 252 million, or an estimated 150% of its withdrawable share over two and a half years (starting from January of this year until October 2026).
He added that this financing program is based on four main pillars, related to integrating climate into the management of public finances and investments, social protection against climate shocks, decarbonization, and enhancing water feasibility within an institutional framework through rational water management, noting that the program is currently being worked on by a ministerial committee from several government sectors headed by the Ministry of Economy and the membership of the Ministries of Petroleum, Water, Environment and the Central Bank, and a technical committee is affiliated with it.
He pointed out that this fund (Resilience and Sustainability) is a very concessional financing repaid over twenty years, established by the International Monetary Fund to help low-income countries face long-term challenges, especially with regard to climate change through investment in green infrastructure, pandemic preparedness on the one hand, and to help those countries meet their needs, and immediate financing to support the budget, in addition to political, tax and regulatory reforms.
