The Commissioner for Food Security, Fatimatou Bint Khatri, said that the Mauritanian government’s commitment to combating poverty, hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition is evident in many steps that have been taken, such as the adoption of a national strategy for social protection, and the establishment of the national mechanism for the prevention of food and nutrition crises, in addition to Establishing and updating the state social registry, in order to accurately and improve social services directed to the poorest populations, including refugees on Mauritanian territory.
She added in a speech she delivered to the participants in the meeting of the World Food Program Board of Directors, yesterday evening, Tuesday in Rome, that the government has adopted a new plan aimed at supporting the resilience of the population and achieving food sovereignty, by financing development programs and income-generating activities, increasing agricultural production and creating a partnership. Between the public and private sectors, in order to invest in agriculture, and to value local production in the fields of fishing and local development.

Her Excellency the Commissioner added that in light of the difficult climatic conditions that Mauritania is experiencing, which are characterized by drought waves, lack of rainfall, unrest in the Sahel, and the increasing influx of Malian refugees into Mauritanian territory, the need for serious work to confront the challenges facing our country in the field of food security is increasing, expressing Appreciating the fruitful cooperation between the Mauritanian government and the World Food Programme, affirming its confidence that this cooperation will contribute significantly to achieving common goals, especially within the framework of the strategy of accelerated growth and shared prosperity, which aims to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
