The Minister of Environment, Lalia Ali Kamara, opened on Tuesday at the Ministry’s premises in Nouakchott a workshop to discuss a report on the strategic environmental and social assessment of the mining sector in Mauritania, in the presence of representatives of the concerned sectors, mining companies and civil society.
This assessment aims to analyse the major impacts of mineral activities on the environment by identifying risks and raising awareness about social and environmental issues, as well as proposing actions to reduce negative impacts and encourage sustainable actions.
This holistic approach reflects the public authorities’ keenness on transparency and finding sustainable solutions to the environmental and social challenges associated with the development of the mineral industry.

In a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency, Director of Environmental Assessment and Control at the Ministry of Environment, Khadija bint Esneih, praised the importance of the mining sector and its leading role in economic and social development, calling for taking the necessary measures to reduce non-respect for the regulations followed in the management of this sector to avoid risks that may affect human health and the environment.
She said that the importance of this study lies in the fact that it comprehensively assesses national mining capabilities, taking into account the relevant environmental and social challenges, and makes a number of recommendations in consultation with various actors in order to sustain mining activity in Mauritania.
She also added that the environment sector was keeping pace with the mining sector with regard to the environmental impact of the activities carried out as well as environmental monitoring.
