Geneva.. Discussing Opportunities for Cooperation Between Mauritania and the European Union in the Field of Humanitarian Work Directed at Refugees
Within the framework of our country’s participation in the activities of the Global Refugee Forum, which was hosted by the Swiss capital, Geneva, from December 13 to 15, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization, Mr. Mohamed Mahfouz Ibrahim Ahmed, met with the Assistant Director-General of European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations in the European Union, Mr. Michael Kohler. .
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the most important opportunities for cooperation between our country and the European Union in the field of humanitarian work directed at refugees.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General gave a detailed presentation regarding the challenges associated with hosting large numbers of refugees on our lands, noting the significant efforts that our country has been making for several years to care for, protect and integrate them, noting the noticeable exacerbation in the recent period of waves of refugees and displaced persons on the one hand and illegal immigrants on the other. Others, which made the situation more complicated and exhausted the country’s absorptive capacity due to the great pressure on natural resources, the budget, job opportunities, public services and facilities.
In turn, the European official praised Mauritania’s pivotal position, stability and credibility, stressing that it receives special care from the European Union.
