President of Republic: “We Have All the Necessary Elements To Become a Major Player in the Global Green Hydrogen Market”

On 25 October, in Brussels (Belgium), His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, participated in a session on the energy transition and green hydrogen as part of the activities of the ”Global Gateway Forum” organized by the European Union.

In his speech on this occasion, His Excellency the President of the Republic declared that our country has all the necessary factors to become one of the major players in the global market for green hydrogen and green mining industries, thanks to its huge potential for renewable energy (estimated at 4,000 gigawatts, of which 500 are ready for immediate development).

Added to this are its unique geographical location and rich mineral reserves, particularly iron.

His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani added that despite the rapid development of renewable energies, green hydrogen is today the one that offers the greatest economic, social, and environmental opportunities, adding that all indicators show that without its large-scale development, the Paris Conference objective of limiting the rise in temperatures to around 1.5 degrees will not be achieved.

Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani declared that a study on infrastructure will be launched in the coming weeks and that we will have in Mauritania before the end of the year a “solid code” for green hydrogen, in addition to a green hydrogen cadastre which guarantees transparency, efficiency, and fairness in the granting of permits.

The President of the Republic also indicated that the majority of green hydrogen projects, according to a final investment decision, are located in industrialized countries, despite the fact that energy sources and capacities are greater in developing countries. He called for the contribution of the Global Gateway Initiative to ensure that the African continent is in a position that meets its enormous needs and potential.
