Mauritania Joins GECF

The twenty-fifth session of the Council of Ministers of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) held on Tuesday in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, approved Mauritania’s accession to the organization as an observer member.

Mauritania’s accession to this organization, which includes 19 countries representing 72% of the world’s total gas reserves, confirms immense potential and promising prospects it possesses in the gas field. This accession also represents a tribute to the integrated vision drawn up by the government to ensure the rational and responsible exploitation of gas resources, and the role that Mauritania can play in light of the new energy transition. Through its energy vision, the government aims for universal access to low-carbon, reliable and low-cost energy.

Mauritania is preparing to start producing gas from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim shared with Senegal by the end of the first quarter of next year.
