UN Committee Welcomes Mauritania’s Efforts To Promote Rights of Persons With Disabilities

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has released its final report containing its observations and recommendations on the review of our country’s initial report on implementating the provisions of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Geneva on 25 August.

The Committee congratulated the government and appreciated the positive interaction through the submission of the initial report and its written responses to the list of points and questions raised by the pre-session working group, as well as for the oral presentation made by the delegation and the additional clarifications provided in response to the questions asked by the members of the Committee.

The Committee also praised the fruitful and sincere dialogue it had had with the high-level multi-sectoral delegation led by His Excellency Mr. Cheikh Ahmedou Ould Sidi, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society.

The UN Committee also welcomed the measures taken by the State to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and implement the Convention since its ratification, particularly in the regulatory area, through the adoption of Decree 169-2017 on access and of Decree 140/2020 establishing the National Observatory for the Rights of Women and Girls and the adoption of the National Strategy for Persons with Disabilities and the National Action Plan against gender-based violence and the National Strategy for Poverty Eradication.

In its final report, the Committee addressed to the government a set of recommendations whose implementation will contribute to strengthening the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, and we will work within the Commission for Human Rights, to Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society to monitor the implementation of these recommendations in cooperation with different actors.
