On 14 June, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Mr. Felix Fischer, the Head of Mission of the Fund in Mauritania.
The meeting focused on the areas of cooperation between Mauritania and this international financial institution and the means of strengthening this cooperation in the service of the economic development of our country.
At the end of the meeting, the IMF official indicated that the talks focused on the economic situation in Mauritania, particularly government programs supported by the IMF.
He added that the meeting touched on the reforms the Government intended to undertake to strengthen economic and financial capacities and deal with climate change.
Mr. Fischer stressed that Mauritania’s economic reform program, supported by agreements with the IMF of around 87 million dollars, aims to preserve macroeconomic stability, strengthen fiscal and monetary policy frameworks, consolidate the foundations for sustainable and inclusive growth, and reduce poverty.
“We also discussed the need to maintain fiscal discipline to contain debt.
Indeed, the maintenance of a restrictive monetary policy, in close coordination with the execution of the budget, will contribute to reducing inflation.”, as he put it.
At the end of the statement, Mr. Fischer expressed his joy to return to Mauritania as head of the IMF mission.
