UK Ambassador: “UK-Mauritania Relations Are Strong”

The Embassy of the United Kingdom in Mauritania organized a reception on 8 June in Nouakchott to celebrate the official birthday of His Majesty Charles III in the presence of the Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Cheikh Abdullah Ould Boya, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad.

In his speech on this occasion, the British diplomat, HE Mr. Colin Wells, affirmed that the United Kingdom is a strong partner of Mauritania, stressing that his country and NATO work in close cooperation with the Mauritanian Armed Forces to strengthen, develop, and modernize their skills.

Referring to regional security, the Ambassador indicated that his country welcomed and supported the Mauritanian presidency of the G-5 Sahel and its commitment to establishing peace, security, and development throughout the region.

“On this occasion, I would like to salute the reception of the Malian refugee populations in Bassiknou and Mberra by the Mauritanian government,” as he put it.

Regarding energy, HE Mr. Wells assured that the massive investment of BP/Kosmos in the GTA field will allow the first gas productions to be marketed very soon before adding: “We are all looking forward to the prospect of a future where Mauritania will be at the forefront of energy production from renewable sources”. He hoped our country would become one of the world’s leading producers of green hydrogen, steel, and ammonia.

He expressed his eagerness to see the establishment of exceptional interpersonal links between Mauritania and the United Kingdom, revealing that 14 Mauritanians had obtained scholarships from the British government to study in the United Kingdom to obtain a Master’s degree and that Each year, 4 or 5 new scholarship holders are selected from among the new generation of Mauritanian talents.

“This significant contribution to the future of Mauritania is a source of pride for me, he noted before concluding: “As you can see, the relationship between the United Kingdom and Mauritania is solid”.
