On 11 May, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received HE Ms. Emmanuela Del Rey, the EU Special Representative for the Sahel region.
Discussions during the meeting focused on cooperation between Mauritania and the European Union and ways to strengthen it to serve common interests and examined issues related to the Sahel region.
At the end of the meeting, the EU Special Envoy made the following statement:
“It is always a distinct honor and a great pleasure for me to meet His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, because I consider that he has enormous charisma and an important capacity to intervene on the regional and international scenes. I also consider that Mauritania, which occupies a central place in the G-5 Sahel, is a very important strategic partner for the European Union with which it shares the desire to build a solid base to guarantee stability and prosperity in Mauritania.
The consultation that I had with His Excellency the President of the Republic naturally focused on the G-5 Sahel at a time when Mauritania holds the rotating presidency of this organization and therefore assumes a great responsibility in a context marked by Mali’s exit from the G-5 Sahel, even if the four other countries remain driven by the desire to consolidate security and development in the region.
The President of the Republic spoke to me about the roadmap of the G-5 Sahel which is of great interest for the European Union insofar as it establishes a reliable project for the security and development of the region and establishes our partnership in favor of the prosperity of the populations of the region.
For the European Union, the meeting is very important because it was an opportunity to reconfirm our great friendship, our close cooperation, and our solid ties aimed at building a common future that guarantees prosperity and stability.
I am very happy to be in Mauritania, a great country committed with the European Union to the service of future generations”.
