On 5 January, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received Dr. Salem Bin Muhammad al-Malek, the Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).
In a statement to the Mauritanian news agency (AMI) after the meeting, the ISESCO Director General expressed his joy at meeting His Excellency the President of the Republic, thanking him for the great consideration he received during this meeting.
He added he was also delighted that the city of Nouakchott was consecrated this year, capital of culture in the Islamic world.
He explained that his organization would work throughout the year to highlight the history and cultural heritage of Mauritania in the Islamic world and the world in general.
Mr. al-Malek said he informed His Excellency the President of the Republic, during the meeting, of a program which focuses essentially on the enhancement of the cultural identity of the Islamic world, the Mauritanian cultural identity, and some of its pillars and fundamentals, such as the mahadra. He indicated that talking about it does not only mean its inclusion in our Islamic heritage, but also working so that this model can inspire other countries in the Islamic world.
He pointed out that this program contains several axes which he discussed with his brother, the Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Relations with Parliament, indicating that there are notable changes in the programs of the Capitals of Culture presented by ISESCO.
The isesco Director General added that Nouakchott, as the capital of culture, would be one of the capitals that would implement this program with a completely different perspective. He noted that within the organization they want to focus on young people, women, cultural identity in general, and integrating people with specific needs in different ways, taking into account the future, variables, and everything related to the virtual digital world.
He said that this year will be an exceptional year, full of activities, programs, competitions, and awards, thanking His Excellency the President of the Republic, as well as the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Relations with Parliament, the National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture, and all Mauritanians.
