Below is the text of the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, a copy of which was received by the Mauritanian News Agency:
“The Islamic Republic of Mauritania joins African States and peoples in celebrating Africa Day, commemorating the establishment of the Organization of African Unity on 25 May 1963.
This landmark historical event embodied the determination of African leaders to unite their ranks, liberate the continent from the yoke of colonialism, and uphold the values of solidarity, unity, and cooperation among its peoples.
This occasion also provides an opportunity to recall the transformative process that led to the establishment of the African Union, as an ambitious and renewed institutional extension of the Pan-African project.
In this regard, the African Union plays a central role in promoting peace and security, advancing efforts toward integration and economic unification, and supporting the aspirations of African peoples for sustainable development and shared prosperity.
In this context, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania reaffirms the importance of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 as a unifying strategic framework aimed at realizing the vision of “The Africa We Want,” through ambitious objectives designed to build a prosperous, integrated, peaceful continent driven by its own peoples.
Mauritania also underscores the need to intensify efforts at the continental level and to mobilize the necessary resources and political will to accelerate the implementation of this Agenda, in order to translate the aspirations of African citizens into tangible realities and strengthen Africa’s position as an influential actor and a leading partner on the international stage.
Faithful to its deeply rooted African identity, Mauritania renews its steadfast commitment to the principles of African unity and the founding values of joint African action, based on solidarity, respect for sovereignty, and the strengthening of cooperation and integration among Member States.
In this framework, our country welcomes the significant achievements accomplished under the enlightened leadership of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, during Mauritania’s tenure as Chair of the African Union in 2024. These efforts contributed to strengthening the continent’s presence, unifying its positions in addressing common challenges, and fostering renewed momentum in support of peace, stability, and the priorities of continental development and integration.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania also emphasizes the importance of the African Union’s 2026 theme on ensuring sustainable access to water and safe sanitation systems for the achievement of the goals of Agenda 2063, considering this issue to reflect the central importance of water security in achieving sustainable development, strengthening public health, and consolidating the continent’s social and economic stability.
Finally, Mauritania expresses its hope that this theme will help stimulate collective African action and advance policies and investments capable of ensuring equitable and sustainable access to water and sanitation services for all African peoples, while reinforcing Africa’s path toward a more prosperous and secure future.
Long live a free and prosperous Africa”.
