The President of the National Assembly of Mauritania, Mr. Mohamed Bamba Meguett, and the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Senegal, Mr. Malick Ndiaye, signed a parliamentary cooperation protocol today, Tuesday, in Nouakchott, between the two legislative institutions.
The signing took place during a reception hosted by the President of the National Assembly for his Senegalese counterpart, who is currently on an official visit to Mauritania at the head of a high-level parliamentary delegation. This visit forms part of efforts to strengthen and develop parliamentary cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Republic of Senegal.
In his address on the occasion, the President of the National Assembly welcomed his guest and the accompanying delegation, highlighting the depth and strength of the distinguished historical relations between Mauritania and Senegal, founded on solid fraternal ties, bonds of kinship, shared faith, and cultural and spiritual proximity.
He emphasized that this shared heritage constitutes a strong foundation for bilateral relations, which are currently experiencing a notable upward momentum, driven by the firm and enlightened political will of the leaders of both countries: His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mauritania, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal.
He further stressed the central role of parliaments in deepening this cooperation, noting that intensifying parliamentary diplomacy and strengthening mechanisms for consultation and institutional coordination represent two essential levers to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of bilateral relations.
For his part, the President of the Senegalese National Assembly expressed his pleasure at the warm and fraternal welcome extended to him and his delegation, praising the quality of relations between the two brotherly countries and the strength of the ties uniting their heads of state.
He underlined the strategic importance of parliamentary cooperation in promoting peace, consolidating democracy, and supporting regional integration, while commending major structural projects, particularly in the fields of gas and the construction of the Rosso Bridge, as well as Mauritania’s ongoing efforts within the framework of fisheries agreements and in facilitating residency conditions for Senegalese nationals living in Mauritania.
The President of the Senegalese National Assembly also expressed his aspiration to continue and strengthen the exchange of expertise between the two institutions, share legislative texts, support the digital transformation of parliaments, establish twinning arrangements between parliamentary committees, and enhance institutional cooperation, in line with the aspirations of the Mauritanian and Senegalese peoples.
This official visit, which will last three days, reflects a strong political will to reinforce cooperation and the strategic partnership between the two National Assemblies.
