Delegation from the National Human Rights Commission is participating in the 41st Session of the United Nations Committee for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families
Geneva
A delegation from the National Human Rights Commission participated in the forty-first session of the United Nations Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, which began this Monday morning in Geneva, Switzerland, and is expected to continue until December 11.
During this session, Mauritania’s periodic report will be reviewed, which includes its responses to the Committee’s observations presented at the previous session held in 2021.
As part of this session, the National Human Rights Commission submitted its detailed report to the United Nations Committee for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The President of the Commission, Mr. El Bekaye Ould Abdel Maleck, delivered a speech at the session on the rights of migrants, in which he reviewed the measures taken by the Mauritanian government and the National Human Rights Commission to protect the rights of migrant workers and their family members.
He emphasized the pressure exerted by the increasing waves of regular and irregular migration since 2023 on public services and natural resources such as pastures and water points, as well as the burden borne by the public administration in this area.
He provided an overview of the Commission, including the main powers conferred upon it under the organic law that established it, noting that it recently obtained ‘A’ status accreditation for national human rights institutions, which grants it full capacity to speak before treaty bodies and credibility as a center of expertise and consultation for various United Nations mechanisms and all technical partners.
