Here is the full text of the statement:
“The Executive Secretariat learned with dismay the news of the death of the current Chairman of the G-5 Sahel.
The G5 Sahel Executive Secretariat, while offering its sincere condolences to the Chadian people following the death of its President, cannot but praise the spirit of leadership in Chad, which was reflected in its tireless work to serve the stability and development of our region and its regional organization. It was also demonstrated by working on adopting a strategy of development and security, which is a reference document and a melting pot of the five member states’ efforts.
The valiant Chadian army has contributed for almost a decade to the process of restoring stability to the Sahel region and has shown a high degree of courage and sacrifice, both in the regions of the Adrar des Ifforas in Mali in 2013 or in the Liptako-Gourma regions (Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger) in 2021.
The Republic of Chad has also contributed to the achievement of the objectives set by the African Union for the G-5 Sahel Joint Force and has provided invaluable support to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali.
The G-5 Executive Secretariat seizes the opportunity to express, at this decisive period in its history, its gratitude to the Republic of Chad for the role it has played in the service of the stability and development of the Sahel region and to reaffirm its full support for the transitional period thus announced.
