On 2 March, in Algiers, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, participated in the 7th summit of heads of state and government of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF).
In his opening speech, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune noted our country’s membership in the GECF as an observer member, stressing that this summit is an opportunity to draw a common vision to preserve both the interests of gas producers and consumers.
The Algiers summit will see the launch of a strategic dialogue and a broad partnership to pave the way for a ‘secure and sustainable’ energy future in a particular international geopolitical context. This event will be crowned by a declaration known as the “Algiers Declaration », which will identify the paths to a fruitful partnership and a common vision to ensure the balance of the gas market and promote the place of natural gas on the energy scene throughout the world.
The GECF summit takes place in a context marked by the growing importance given to natural gas as a crucial energy source for economic and social development since it is one of the most important, clean, and environmentally friendly alternative sources of energy, which calls for deeper reflection and consultation to confirm the value of gas as an essential resource for the energy transition, to meet the challenges of developing energy technologies extraction, and encourage investment in research and expansion of exploration fields, within the framework of fruitful partnerships between producer and consumer countries.
This Forum, created in 2001, includes 12 countries, namely: Libya, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. It also includes 7 observer countries, namely: Mauritania, Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Mozambique, and Peru.
GECF Member countries represent 70% of global natural gas reserves and around 40% of global gas exports. The forum also accounts for more than half of LNG exports and 47% of pipeline exports.
