On 28 March, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, received a United Nations mission led by Ms. Giovanie Biha, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africaand the Sahel.
In a statement to the Mauritanian news agency at the end of the meeting, the UN official said he had the opportunity to review with the President of the Republic the situation in the sub-region, particularly the G5 Sahel countries. She added it was an opportunity “to congratulate him on the presidency of the G-5 Sahel and on Mauritania’s constant commitment to all the countries that make up the G-5 Sahel”.
The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel added “As you know Mauritania hosts the G-5 Sahel Secretariat which benefits from the constant and substantial support of the Mauritanian government”. “We are coming to an important moment for Mauritania, a moment when it takes the presidency of the G-5 Sahel, but also an important moment when it is engaged in a process of organizing local and municipal regional elections. It was also an opportunity to congratulate the Mauritanian government for the state of progress in the organization of the elections, which were the subject of broad consultations and political dialogue with all the stakeholders to hold peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections.
Talking about her her mission, she said that her main purpose is to discuss the priorities, the vision of the Head of State on the future of the G-5 Sahel, and to reiterate the commitment of UNOWAS and the United Nations system to support the President during what is, moreover, a turbulent period, a difficult and sensitive period for the sub-region.
“So we have renewed our commitment to support the Mauritanian government in its presidency and reiterated the constant support and to remain at its side to finally lead a presidency which will be effective and which
will have results for all the countries of the sub-region”, as she put it.
