On 15 March, in Nouakchott, Mr. Cheikh Ahmedou Ould Ahmed Salem Ould Sidi, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and Relations with Civil Society, received, a high-level US delegation, led by Ms. Ozra Zia, the Under Secretary of State for Civil Defense, Democracy, and Human Rights.

The meeting discussed recent progress in the promotion and protection of human rights in Mauritania and the prospects for strengthening this progress, particularly with the approval, on 14 March, by the Ministerial Committee in charge of Human Rights of the draft national strategy for the promotion and protection of human rights, prepared by the commission in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mauritania.

During the meeting, the Commissioner made a presentation on various aspects of the development of the human rights record in our country, including the legal and institutional framework and human rights policies and programs.

Mr. Ould Sidi expressed to the American delegation his appreciation for the efforts made by all the technical and financial partners to follow this path, stressing the determination of the country’s supreme authorities to move forward in the promotion and protection of all rights and freedoms.He recalled that the promotion of human rights is everyone’s responsibility, including governmental and non-governmental actors and international partners.

For her part, Ms. Zia thanked the UNHCR for the tremendous efforts it had made over the past few years in the area of combating human trafficking and for its positive interaction with the staff of the US Embassy, expressing her appreciation for the remarkable progress in the area of consolidation of democracy in Mauritania.

She congratulated the Mauritanian government for the establishment of the National Commission to Combat Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants, considering it an important step in the field of the protection of human rights and expressing the will of the government of the United States to support this institution.
