President of Republic Arrives in Sharm El Sheikh

On 6 November, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, the President of the Republic, arrived in the city of Sharm El Sheikh in the Arab Republic of Egypt to participate in the work of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 27).
The President of the Republic was received at the airport by a high-level Egyptian delegation and the staff of the Mauritanian embassy in the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt.
The COP 27 will act on a range of critical issues to address the climate emergency, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience, and adapting to the negative impacts of climate change to meeting commitments to finance climate action in developing countries.
As part of its efforts to preserve the environment, Mauritania has launched several awareness-raising programs, enacted a legal arsenal that criminalizes harming the environment, and put in place a mechanism to protect the fragile areas most vulnerable to climate change.
In this context, the state has made major investments to adapt the local population to climate change by financing income-generating activities to improve their living conditions. It has also enacted binding laws to protect the environment by obligating the preparation of environmental and social impact studies on every public or private investor in addition to working to preserve natural pastures.
The measures taken by Mauritania to confront climate change also included setting up a legal arsenal to protect endangered marine species, criminalizing the use of toxic materials in mining processes, obligating the treatment of mining residues, organizing afforestation campaigns, and contributing to relevant regional and continental initiatives.
