Rome: Food Security Commissioner Briefs International Officials on Our Country’s Food Security Efforts

On 12 October, in Rome, Ms. Fatimetou Mint Khattry, the Commissioner for Food Safety (CSA), held two working sessions with Mr. Gabriel Ferrero, the Chairman of the Food Safety Commission of the UN Food and Agriculture (FAO), and Mr. Donald Brown, the Vice-President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

During the two meetings, Ms. Mint Khattry presented to the heads of these two important international institutions the substantial efforts made by the Mauritanian government to strengthen the country’s capacities in terms of food security and to deal with the crises caused by a difficult international situation, to mitigate their impact on people’s living conditions.
In this context, the Commissioner for Food Security reviewed the main programs and projects implemented for the benefit of the most vulnerable groups, citing, in this regard, the “Lehdada” program, securing against the consequences of drought, but also the government’s efforts to support agriculture and move toward food self-sufficiency. She called on these specialized international institutions to support these national orientations in terms of food security.
In turn, Mr. Ferrero expressed to the Commissioner for Food Security the esteem that his institution has for the efforts of the Mauritanian government in food security and the availability of his institution to support these directions.

For his part, Mr. Brown praised Mauritanian government’s efforts in the field of food security, promising to study the ways and means that the institution should follow to support these efforts, particularly in terms of food security and the encouragement of agricultural production. He expressed IFAD’s interest in the “Lehdada” program implemented by the CSA and benefiting the most deprived populations.
