On 12 October, in Rome, Food Security Commissioner Fatimetou Mint Khattry met with Mr. Qu Dongyu, the Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the meetings of the FAO Food Security Commission, the Commissioner informed the Director General of the organization of the efforts undertaken by the government in the field of food security, particularly in an international situation marked by the COVID-19 crisis, regional unrest, the consequences of the war in Ukraine, the food crisis, drought, and desertification.
She said that Mauritania had put in place two government plans, one of which is to deal with these crises to mitigate their consequences on the living conditions of the populations and the other ambitious to achieve food self-sufficiency.
Ms. Mint Khattry, who expressed her thanks to Mr. Qu Dongyu for FAO’s support for Mauritania’s efforts in the area of food security, called on the organization to support the food self-sufficiency plan and called for more coordination and cooperation between our country and this UN body.
For his part, the FAO Director General hailed Mauritania’s efforts in the field of food security, stressing that the organization has put in place an ambitious plan to mobilize the financial resources necessary to achieve an agrarian revolution that could help fill the food gap.
Mr. Qu Dongyu, who expressed FAO’s commitment to supporting Mauritania’s efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency, said that our country will benefit from the resources that will be mobilized.
