His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, received on Thursday at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott the Senegalese Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. El Hadj Abdourahmane Diouf, who delivered a message from His Excellency the President of the Republic of Senegal, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Following the audience, the Senegalese Minister of Energy and Petroleum made the following statement:
“I came to Nouakchott today to deliver a personal message from the President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to his counterpart in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
It is a message of peace, a message of brotherhood, and a message intended to strengthen the longstanding bonds that unite Mauritania and Senegal.
I had the immense honor of conveying this message to the President of the Republic of Mauritania, through which President Bassirou Diomaye Faye reaffirmed the ties that unite our two countries in all areas of economic and social life. Our two States work hand in hand to address the concerns and aspirations of our respective peoples.
Beyond this fraternal message, I also came to discuss matters of strategic importance related to the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, which constitutes a remarkable example of bilateral cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal.
When two responsible countries maintain relations concerning issues as sensitive as oil and gas, even within the framework of tripartite cooperation with an operator, it is extremely important that they coordinate their positions. This is precisely what we are doing, demonstrating once again that the interests of Mauritania and Senegal are fully aligned in this matter.
Senegal, under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, will always defend the interests of Mauritania in this matter, under all circumstances.
We also came to present a number of issues to the Mauritanian President and seek his support on them.
In short, that is the message I came to deliver.
Finally, I would like to thank my counterpart, the Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Petroleum, for the warm welcome extended to us.”
