The Ministry of Social Action, Childhood, and Family organized an Iftar dinner on Thursday evening in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
This meeting comes within the framework of commemorating International Women’s Day, as it provided an opportunity to discuss measures to ensure the rights of women and girls and facilitate their access to fair justice in Mauritania.

The Minister of Social Action, Childhood, and Family, Mrs. Safia Ntahah, emphasized in a speech on the occasion that the Mauritanian Constitution enshrines the principle of equality of citizens before the law, noting that this meeting aims to strengthen dialogue among various actors from public authorities, parliamentarians, justice sector professionals, civil society organizations, and development partners, contributing to the protection of the rights of women and girls and the consolidation of the principles of the rule of law.

The minister also appreciated the support of technical and financial partners, especially the United Nations Development Program and UNICEF, for Mauritania’s efforts in the field of women’s empowerment and the promotion of justice.

In turn, the UNICEF representative in Mauritania, Mr. Mansour Ndiay, emphasized the importance of strengthening the protection of the rights of women and girls and ensuring their access to justice, pointing out the progress Mauritania has made in this field, while noting the continued need to reinforce protection mechanisms and enforce laws. The organization also works, within the framework of the 2024–2027 cooperation program, to support the empowerment of girls, prevent violence, and promote fair justice.

For his part, the UN Resident Representative for Childhood, Mr. Al-Kabeer Al-Alawi, expressed the necessity of strengthening the protection of women and girls in Mauritania and ensuring their access to justice. He indicated that Mauritania has made progress in this area by embedding the principle of equality in the constitution and ratifying international agreements, while simultaneously stressing the importance of continuing efforts to enhance protection mechanisms, combat violence, and enable women and girls to know their rights and defend them.
