On March 8, via videoconference, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, participated in the extraordinary meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, devoted to Iranian attacks against Arab countries.
In his speech, the Minister affirmed that the region is going through a critical period in terms of national security, stressing that Arab national security is indivisible, following the recent attacks that targeted some Arab countries and violated their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He explained that those events require thoughtful, effective, and judicious measures, taking into account the different contexts and issues related to the ongoing conflict, to ensure the preservation of the security and stability of the Arab peoples involved in this war.
Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug reiterated Mauritania’s strong condemnation of the attacks targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Iraq, the Sultanate of Oman, and the Kingdom of Bahrain, affirming its absolute solidarity with these brotherly countries in the face of any attempt to undermine their sovereignty or destabilize them.
He stressed that the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of these countries constitutes a direct attack on Arab national security, which must be countered with the necessary and decisive measures. He affirmed Mauritania’s support for all measures taken by the countries concerned to defend their security and stability.
The Minister called for bringing an end to these attacks, which constitute a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a disregard for the principles of good neighborliness and the obligations and commitments they entail.
He emphasized the need for a profound and serious understanding of the transformations occurring within the world order, and the importance of adapting to them by taking the necessary measures to safeguard the nation’s security and interests, while strengthening its effectiveness within a reshaped international system.
He welcomed the mediation efforts of the Sultanate of Oman and Qatar to spare the region and the world the horrors of this war, praising the wisdom and restraint shown by the parties involved in the face of these unacceptable attacks.
In conclusion, the Foreign Minister affirmed Mauritania’s support for all decisions that the League Council will adopt at this meeting and called for the most effective means to be implemented to apply them.
