His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, confirmed that during his current visit to the province of Gorgol, and his previous visit to the Eastern Basin, he saw the scale of the development programmes that have been implemented or are currently being implemented and their suitability to the needs of citizens.

In a speech delivered on Thursday evening to officials in the province of Mounguel, His Excellency explained that these visits had enabled him to see for himself some of the problems and shortcomings that remain and that efforts will be made to overcome them as soon as possible.

He said that the prospects are promising and that the economic, political and security situation in the country is good, stressing that Mauritania is capable, despite the challenges, of joining the ranks of developing countries. He pointed out that the government has a clear vision for accelerating economic, political and social transformation, ensuring comprehensive, equitable and sustainable development.

His Excellency the President explained that this vision is based on four fundamental pillars, including appeasement, dialogue and consensus, stemming from a firm conviction that everyone must be involved in public affairs, stressing that the free exchange of views without fear or political exploitation will have a positive impact on the decisions taken.

His Excellency the President of the Republic expressed his sincere thanks to the various political parties, both majority and opposition, for their contribution to maintaining an atmosphere of respect and calm and putting the public interest above partisan interests, expressing his certainty that this path will succeed in developing and strengthening this national partnership in the interests of the country.

He stressed that he would be on the lookout for any misuse of the atmosphere of openness and calm, emphasising that what cannot be achieved through discussion, dialogue and exchange of views will not be achieved by other means.

He added that security is the cornerstone of this vision, as there can be no politics or development without security, reassuring citizens that the necessary measures are being taken and constantly updated to secure the country.

In the economic sphere, His Excellency the President of the Republic explained that the indicators are positive, with growth rates rising while the fiscal deficit, inflation and debt indicators are low, in parallel with progress in the creation of growth-supporting infrastructure, such as power stations, ports, digitisation and administrative development, as well as significant results in the field of agriculture and work to bring about strategic transformations in the mining, industry, fishing and animal development sectors.

His Excellency the President of the Republic emphasised that social policies aimed at eliminating disparities between different segments of society are also among the pillars of this vision, referring in this regard to the social programmes implemented by the General Delegation for National Solidarity and the Fight against Exclusion (Taazour) and the Food Security Commission, in addition to interventions by other government sectors.

He said that the country will soon be able to universalise education, health, electricity and water services, especially in the most needy areas, noting that what has been achieved in the field of health and education infrastructure since 2019 exceeds what has been achieved in previous periods.

His Excellency the President of the Republic pointed out that human resource development is one of the fundamental pillars of the vision, considering that its development depends on placing young people at the heart of public policy, and explaining that the allocation of the mandate to young people and by young people comes within this framework.

His Excellency emphasised that the government has made significant investments in higher education and vocational training in order to expand capacity and improve the quality of training to meet the requirements of the labour market, noting that the capacity of vocational training centres has increased fivefold.

Speaking about the labour market, His Excellency the President said that the economic dynamism witnessed by the country has created tens of thousands of job opportunities in the construction, agriculture and fishing sectors, but that nearly 70% of these opportunities have been taken up by foreign workers, while our young people are reluctant to work and are preoccupied with unimportant things such as social media.

He called on young people to seek work and earn a halal income, to focus on their education and to engage in work and fields that serve the country, pointing out that if the country’s resources are used wisely, they can achieve fair and sustainable development that benefits everyone.
