President Affirms Judicial Reform as a National Priority

His Excellency the President of the Republic, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, affirmed that the judiciary constitutes a fundamental pillar for consolidating the rule of law, ensuring stability, and strengthening citizens’ trust in state institutions.

While chairing the session of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary held today, Monday, at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott, His Excellency stressed that judicial reform is a national priority that cannot be postponed.

The Council reviewed the outcomes of judicial work during the year 2025 and discussed the implementation of the National Document for the Reform and Development of Justice. It also approved a number of decisions, including the adoption of recommendations to enhance the quality of judicial performance, the confirmation of the 2022 cohort of judges, the integration of a new cohort, the approval of an updated Code of Judicial Ethics, and the endorsement of judicial transfers based on professional and transparent criteria.

The Council was also informed of the justice sector’s intention to begin, during the first half of the coming year, the implementation of a package of priority measures. These include the recruitment of judges and court clerks, the review of the legal framework governing the judiciary, the activation of the Higher Institute of the Judiciary, the improvement of judicial infrastructure and equipment, and the adoption of a transparent approach to managing judges’ career paths.

In conclusion, the Council commended the efforts made by judges, court clerks, and judicial staff, reaffirming its commitment to continuing reform in order to establish an independent, impartial, and efficient judiciary that strengthens the rule of law and consolidates the trust of citizens and residents.
