Opening of a National Symposium on Natural Resources and Mechanisms for Their Conservation

The Center for Reflection and Studies on the Environment, Education and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, organized a national seminar on natural resources and ways to preserve them under the slogan “Our natural resources are our future” on Thursday in Nouakchott.

The seminar aims to focus on environmental issues, particularly those related to threats to the sustainability of natural resources.

The Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Acting Secretary General, Mr. Salah Mohamed Abbas, highlighted the importance of the seminar’s topic, which addresses the impact of industrial and mining activities on the marine and desert environment. This reflects an advanced awareness of the need to integrate environmental considerations into Mauritania’s development policies and reinforces everyone’s aspiration for sustainable development that takes into account the interests of future generations.

He noted that the meeting aims to highlight some of these challenges by assessing the impacts of flour and fish oil factories in Nouadhibou, and artisanal and industrial mining in Akjoujt and Chami. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on real-life experiences through a documentary dedicated to the women of the Imraguen community who are keen to strike a balance between the demands of daily life and protection.

He praised the efforts of those responsible for this important scientific event, calling on all participants to enrich the discussion and come up with practical, implementable recommendations that contribute to rationalizing the use of wealth and ensuring its sustainability.

For his part, Mr. Al-Qasim Ould Ahmedou, President of the Center for Reflection and Studies on the Environment, Education and Sustainable Development, explained that this meeting reflects a clear commitment and deep concern for the sustainable development of the country and the preservation of its natural resources.

He said that the ministry’s supervision of this event is clear evidence of the sector’s keenness to address the disturbances affecting ecosystems and their serious repercussions on the country and the planet in general, adding that this symposium will be the start of a series of similar events in the coming years on pressing environmental issues.
