Minister of Culture oversees Opening of Symposium on the Role of Culture, Arts and Media in Empowering Women

Nouakchott

This symposium, organized on the occasion of World Population Day, aims to support women’s participation in economic and political life and to promote their presence in positions of responsibility.

The event featured several presentations on aspects related to the advancement of women, delivered by a select group of experts and specialists in social, cultural, and media affairs in the country, as well as literary readings on the status of women in Mauritanian society.

In his speech on the occasion, the Minister said that the Mauritanian government has made women’s empowerment a priority in its work, recognizing the pivotal role that women play in building and advancing society. This has been reflected in public policies, in line with the program of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, “My Ambition for the Nation,” which provides a clear roadmap for building a more just and equitable society.

He added that art and media play a pivotal role in promoting the values of equality and social justice by highlighting the challenges faced by women and raising public awareness of the importance of their empowerment.

He emphasized that national experience has shown that cultural and artistic media are an effective means of promoting a positive image of women and valuing their contributions in various areas of life.

The Minister noted that the culture sector is paying increasing attention to supporting women’s creativity and encouraging initiatives that highlight women’s abilities and elevate their status within the family and society.

In a speech earlier, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Ms. Olga Sankara, explained that Mauritania has made significant progress in the field of women’s empowerment by ensuring equal opportunities for women and men in public and private facilities.

She added that the symposium aims to encourage the participation of actors in the fields of culture, arts, and media, and to strengthen their role in women’s empowerment by sharing best practices in integrating culture and arts into the promotion of women’s participation and the fight against violence against women.

The opening of the symposium was attended by the governor of Nouakchott West, the president of the Nouakchott region, the director general of the Mauritanian News Agency, and a number of officials from the Ministry of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations with Parliament.
