On 16 July, in Nouakchott, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Republic, held a news conference with His Excellency Mr. Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, following the first high-level session between Mauritania and Spain.
During the news conference, the President of the Republic emphasized that the excellent relations between Mauritania and Spain reflect the depth of the friendship that unites the two friendly peoples. He praised the spirit of cooperation and understanding that characterizes this bilateral partnership.
His Excellency highly appreciated the commitment of the Spanish government to defending just causes and promoting peace and security at both regional and international levels, expressing Mauritania’s gratitude for this support, which embodies the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility.
His Excellency explained that the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss several vital issues of common interest, notably security, development, migration, and environmental challenges, as well as prospects for cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani commended the enlightened leadership of the Spanish Prime Minister and his efforts to establish a fair and balanced partnership, which contributes to sustainable development efforts in the Sahel region and across the African continent.
In conclusion, His Excellency expressed his great satisfaction with the positive results achieved during the meeting, stressing that they will give a strong impetus to the strengthening of bilateral relations and the establishment of a strategic partnership between Mauritania and Spain.
For his part, the Spanish Prime Minister, Mr. Pedro Sanchez, affirmed that his country and Mauritania are determined to elevate their economic relations to a higher level that meets their ambitions. As evidence of this, the Spain-Mauritania Business Council was launched in conjunction with the ratification of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation between the two countries. He noted that the forum will conclude under the supervision of the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and the Prime Minister of Spain.
The Spanish Prime Minister affirmed both countries’ commitment to dialogue and cooperation as the only way to ensure the well-being of their peoples. He recalled that the two countries share interests linked to common geographical areas such as the Mediterranean, Europe’s southern neighborhood, the Sahel, the Maghreb, and the Atlantic connection. Therefore, joint action in all these regions, with a strategic vision, is the best way to face challenges and seize the opportunities available in these areas.
