The Minister of Public Service and Labor, Mohamed Ould Soueidat, held a meeting on Monday in Geneva with Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
The meeting was an opportunity for the minister to present the most important reforms that the sector is currently working on, especially those related to the studies prepared for the public forums for social protection that the government intends to organize in the next few months.
The Minister recalled the importance of starting the preparation of the National Program for the Promotion of Decent Work, which will be supervised by the ILO.
The meeting was also an opportunity to brief the Director-General on the progress of the process of defining trade union representation for workers’ trade union organizations.
The Minister asked the Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) to seek a solution for the program to strengthen the capacities of labor inspectors and monitors, which was to be implemented through funding from the United States of America and has been delayed due to the recent international political situation.
In his response to the Minister, the Director-General said that he pays special attention to the Mauritanian initiative on social protection, which could serve as a model to be emulated, especially since his organization is currently preparing the International Conference on Social Development, which will take place this year in Doha, Qatar.
Regarding the other points, the Director General pledged to support our country by preparing the program requested by the Minister, which is related to decent work on the one hand and looking for a solution to the program to strengthen the capacity of the Labor Inspectorate on the other hand.
We note that the meeting took place in the presence of our Ambassador to Geneva, Ms. Aicha Vall Verges, and members of the minister’s accompanying delegation.
