Conclusion of the Days of the Great Green Wall

The Days of the Great Green Wall, organized by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, concluded Monday evening in Nouakchott on accelerating the implementation of development projects and programmes at the level of the regions on its track.

The closing ceremony was marked by a speech by the Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Salma, in charge of a mission at the Ministry’s office, in which he warned that these days, which were organized under the slogan “Together to accelerate the implementation of the Great Green Wall”, witnessed the distinguished participation of more than two hundred participants representing partners and interested people from inside and outside the country, which reflected the collective commitment to face environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.

He said that these days witnessed the launch of important projects, including panel discussions, workshops, technical training, and a specialized training course to raise the efficiency of participants in the fields of restoring degraded lands, managing natural resources and enhancing the resilience of local communities to climate change.

He pointed out that within the framework of women’s empowerment and their role in protecting the environment, the Green Platform for the Women of the Great Green Wall was launched, during which a national office was elected, and regional offices that include thirty leading women in the field, in addition to launching a workshop on the formulation of a project to support the capacity of vulnerable groups and ecosystems to adapt to climate change.

He stressed that these achievements would not have been achieved without the wise vision of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who made environmental issues and combating desertification within the framework of the Great Green Wall initiative a national priority.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Sidna Ould Ahmed Ely, said in a statement to the Mauritanian News Agency that the days of the Great Green Wall represented a key station to consolidate our country’s commitment to this continental initiative, which enjoys the high patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, and is accompanied by a governmental dynamic led by the Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay in order to ensure the implementation of major projects in accordance with an integrated and sustainable development vision.

He added that it witnessed the participation of more than 200 actors, experts and interested parties from various sectors, which reflects the growing interest in the Great Green Wall initiative and everyones commitment to supporting it.

He pointed out that the growing credibility of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, both at the national and international levels, reflects the progress made in achieving its objectives, which enhances its role as a key actor in the implementation of major environmental programs.

He said that those in charge of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall are leaving these days with a renewed will and a stronger determination to continue efforts, relying on the support of the state and partners, and transforming recommendations into practical steps that strengthen our country‘s position as a model in the implementation of the Great Green Wall initiative.
