Foreign Minister chairs the Meeting of the 46th Session of the Executive Council of the AU

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, chaired on Wednesday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, the meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) in preparation for the 38th AU Summit to be held on 15 and 16 February under the chairmanship of HE President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the rotating Chairperson of the African Union (AU).

 

In his speech during the meeting, the Minister reviewed the busy work of the AU Executive Council during the past year and the decisive decisions taken in favor of the African continent, as well as the summits and meetings he participated in on behalf of the Union, which played an important role in making the African voice heard in various international forums, noting that these meetings were an opportunity to strengthen relations with various development partners in order to develop various development projects for the benefit of the continent.

 

He added that during his participation in many seminars and roundtables and in his meetings with many leaders and ministers from different countries of the world, he was keen to raise the various issues of the African continent, especially the negative effects of climate change and migration issues, in addition to calling for the reform of the UN Security Council, international financial institutions and the World Trade Organization to ensure the interests of the peoples of our continent and ensure its position globally.

 

The Minister called for the continuation of work to strengthen the principles of cooperation and integration, which constitute the essence of the Union’s work. He reviewed the agenda of the session, the foremost of which is the election and appointment of commissioners, calling in this context to ensure that these elections are held in an atmosphere of brotherhood, calm, solidarity and wisdom, and that these elections reflect the hopes and aspirations of the peoples of the continent to achieve unity, integration, development and prosperity.

 

The Ambassador HE Mrs. Khadija Mbarek Vall, Permanent Representative of Mauritania to the AU, presented the report of the AU Permanent Delegates Committee, during which she reviewed the various projects, statements and resolutions adopted in favor of the peoples of the African continent.
